This dual role makes it uniquely important in atmospheric chemistry, connecting two of the most critical environmental challenges of our era.<\/p>\n<h2>The NO\u2093 Mechanism<\/h2>\n<p>When N\u2082O reacts with excited oxygen atoms O(\u00b9D) in the stratosphere, it produces nitric oxide (NO). NO catalytically destroys ozone through a well-established chain reaction: NO + O\u2083 \u2192 NO\u2082 + O\u2082, followed by NO\u2082 + O \u2192 NO + O\u2082. The net result is ozone destruction while NO is regenerated to continue the cycle.<\/p>\n<div class=\"atmo-data-box\">\n<div class=\"atmo-data-box__title\">Ozone Impact Metrics<\/div>\n<p>N\u2082O ODP (ozone depletion potential): 0.017<br \/>\nN\u2082O current ODS contribution: ~largest single source<br \/>\nN\u2082O-derived NO\u2093 share of ozone loss: ~33%<br \/>\nMontreal Protocol coverage: excluded<\/div>\n<h2>The Montreal Protocol Gap<\/h2>\n<p>The Montreal Protocol successfully phased out chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and other halogenated ODS, but N\u2082O was never included \u2014 primarily because its agricultural origins made it politically difficult to regulate. Ravishankara et al.
