As urbanization drives the expansion of centralized wastewater infrastructure globally, this source category is growing rapidly — yet it remains poorly characterized in national emission inventories.

Production Mechanisms

N₂O is produced in WWTPs during biological nitrogen removal processes. Both nitrification (oxidation of ammonium to nitrate) and denitrification (reduction of nitrate to nitrogen gas) can produce N₂O as a byproduct. The emission factors vary enormously between treatment systems — from less than 0.01% of total nitrogen load in well-optimized systems to over 10% in poorly controlled ones.

Emission Variability

Typical emission factor range: 0.001–10% of N-load
Global WWTP N₂O contribution: ~3% of anthropogenic
Emission hotspots: aeration basins, anoxic zones
Peak times: process transitions, high loading

Mitigation Potential

Process optimization can dramatically reduce WWTP N₂O emissions. Strategies include maintaining appropriate dissolved oxygen levels, avoiding nitrogen spikes through equalization tanks, and advanced control systems that detect and respond to N₂O production in real time. Several European facilities have demonstrated 70–90% emission reductions through careful process management.

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are an underappreciated but significant source of N₂O emissions.
